If there’s one thing I swear by, it’s the power of an in-person consultation.
There’s no better way to truly understand your client’s needs, build a genuine connection, and set the stage for a successful project.
These face-to-face conversations have been a game-changer for my business, helping me establish trust, deliver better service, and sell bigger projects.
But here’s the secret: asking the right questions can turn an average consultation into an opportunity to establish yourself as the service provider to handle the project and sell larger projects.
Below are five questions I don’t leave a consultation without asking.
1. How long have you been wanting to do this?
We ask this to encourage clients to open up about their projects and pain points.
Often, the longer someone has been thinking about a project, the more frustrated they feel with not having it done.
By having them verbalize how long they’ve wanted to complete the project, we highlight their need and create a sense of urgency.
This question helps set the tone for the rest of the conversation by digging into why now is the time for them to take action.
2. What’s your vision for this project? Can you describe in detail how you’d like the end result to look and feel?
This question lets us dive deep into the client’s desires and expectations.
We want them to feel heard, which builds trust and confidence that we understand their needs.
Asking for specifics about the end result shows that we care about delivering exactly what they want.
Follow-up questions to their answers help guide them to provide more detail, ensuring that we can exceed their expectations and solve their unique problems.
3. Do you have any other areas you would potentially want help with?
After discussing the primary project, it’s a perfect time to explore other areas that might benefit from organizing or decluttering.
Many clients only realize how much they want help in other areas once we ask.
This question uncovers additional opportunities to serve and maximizes the value we can bring in one consultation.
I believe the best chance to upsell or land larger projects happens in person, making this question a key step in understanding the full scope of their needs.
4. Do you have an idea of when you would like to get this started?
By asking this, we gauge the client’s urgency and readiness to move forward.
Knowing their timeline helps us understand whether we’re in a selling situation and how serious they are about getting started.
Even if it’s been discussed before, asking this during the consultation confirms their commitment and lets us align our availability with their expectations.
It indicates whether they’re ready to book or still on the fence.
5. Did you have a budget or price range in mind that you want to stay in for this project?
Pricing is an essential part of any consultation.
Asking about the budget upfront ensures that both parties are on the same page financially, preventing surprises later on.
It also allows us to tailor our solutions to fit within their price range.
This question is usually best asked toward the end once the client has a clearer understanding of the value we offer.
It helps us gauge whether they’re realistic about the costs and ready to invest in the solution they need.
Bonus Questions
- Have you ever had a professional organizer organize your house before?
- What is most important to you about this project?
- Realistically, how much do you think you are going to part with? (If decluttering)
Why In-Person Consultations?
In my experience, in-person consultations are an easy way to demonstrate your expertise and stand out.
They allow you to build a stronger connection with the client, making it easier to understand their needs and offering tailored solutions.
This face-to-face interaction often leads to higher conversion rates (more sales!) and larger project sales, as clients feel more confident in your ability to deliver results.
Many other home service industries (HVAC, Plumbing, Home Remodeling, Patio Covers, etc.) use this approach because it works—the same goes for professional organizing.
Seeing the project space firsthand also gives you a much clearer understanding of what’s needed, allowing you to provide more accurate recommendations and deliver exceptional customer service.
Closing Thoughts
Conducting consultations does require additional effort, but I promise it’s worth it over the long run!
I believe it’s the best way to sell larger projects and deliver excellent customer service.
